Kite flying activity held in Weifang city, Shandong Province to welcome Beijing 2022

On Jan. 23, kite enthusiasts gathered for a kite flying activity held by the city of Weifang in east China’s Shandong Province to welcome the upcoming Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games.

Various exquisite kites were seen in the sky above the Weifang Binhai International Kite Flying Field, where the activity was held, demonstrating the excellent kite-making craftsmanship in Weifang, which is known as “kite capital of the world.”

Apart from regular kites, local kite craftsmen had specially designed and manufactured two kites to showcase the Winter Olympics elements, including the emblems, mascots, and official motto for the Games. It is hoped that through the activity, kite flying and snow and ice sports can be better integrated.

A cascade of kites featuring emblems for the Olympic Games with a total length of 2,022 meters were seen hovering in the air. Against the background of the sky, the images of the emblems on the kites seemed to be shining.

“We designed the 2,022-meter-long kites featuring the emblems for the Olympic Games, as well as sports events held during previous Winter Olympics and Paralympics, to express our best wish for a successful Games in Beijing,” said Xie Shengli, a city-level inheritor of Weifang kites, a national intangible cultural heritage project in China.

Another soft-winged kite named “Together for a Shared Future,” which is the official motto of Beijing 2022, was also seen in the sky, literally joining hands with two 10-meter-long kites featuring the mascots for Beijing 2022 — “Bing Dwen Dwen” for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and “Shuey Rhon Rhon” for the Paralympic Games, as well as five other smaller kites, all five meters in length. This design symbolized that mankind is a community with a shared future and together they can embrace a better future and bring joy to the world through unity.

“We’ll further combine the kite culture with the Olympic spirit, build the International Kite Federation into an international sports organization so that kite flying can be made a non-Olympic sports event, and contribute to building our country into a strong sporting country. We wish Beijing 2022 a success,” said Zhang Jianwei, director of the Comprehensive Service Center of the International Sports Association in Weifang, which organized the activity.
